Each day people may do or say things that they regret. Imagine talking to your coworkers about your crazy weekend in Las Vegas then you see the CEO pouring a cup of coffee within earshot. You wish you could have just stopped talking. You feel that this will totally affect your ability to progress. The truth is, it may but you have the power to stop it from happening again.
It is imperative that we spend time each day reflecting on what has happened. Each day, each event, each situation, each conversation and movement offer opportunities to progress, to learn. Whenever you feel the pang of regret, hold that time in your mind. Later in the day or when you have a free moment, reflect on why that happened and what you could do to take the higher path next time around.
It does you no justice to sit and fret over a situation. You will not grow from worry, you will only cause more worry. Changing your thinking, flipping it all around to show the positive rather than the negative will help you to grow. Tell yourself, “There is no way I can take that back,” then ask yourself, “What can I do to stop this from happening again?” Doing this daily will help you change your thinking and be a stronger, wiser individual.
Imagine you are having a conversation with one of your friends. You can’t help but to give your opinion on her new boyfriend. You tell her that you don’t really like him and he can be disrespectful and immature. After leaving her you start regretting your words. You feel that you were too harsh and wish you could take back what you said. Although you cannot take your words back you can you can apologize. This will show your friend that you realized your mistake and although you may have truly meant those words you didn’t mean to hurt her.
Giving yourself time for reflection will help you grow. It will help you to grow as an individual and will help you to be a better person to all those you touch. You can help yourself grow in incredible ways. Reflection can also help you be happier and feel more at peace, even in the most stressful of times.
Driving in traffic is great example. Traffic is a time when you must be alert the entire time you are in your car. You see people do unsatisfactory acts and it may upset you and cause you stress or anger. If you were to reflect on this you could see the times where you were upset and think of ways you could have calmed yourself. Morning traffic is a great time to think about your day, not the stressful parts but your schedule, possible encounters with people and how to handle them appropriately. This type of thinking increases your cognition and makes you more prepared for your day. Evening traffic is very different. You are exhausted from work and are struggling to stay awake with a lack of patience. This makes it very difficult to remain composed. This is where it is beneficial to imagine all the joyous things that are waiting for you at home or wherever your destination.
Feeling upset can cause you to act out irrationally. Irrationality shows that you are not in the right state of mind and no long hold control of your present situation. Take the opportunity to feel that you are upset and walk away. You do not have to do this is in a dismissive way. Just ask for a moment to consider your options and separate yourself. Reflect on the situation and imagine how you can take the high road.
Whether you’re reflecting during a situation or after you are able to gain new perspectives on situations that occur and grow in the future. This is the best way to become a successful, knowledgeable person. The knowledgeable person attracts all those around them because they are centered and a joy to be around. Next time you are in a rut, take the high road and reap the wonderful rewards.
